Team Mavericks will be playing on away ground after convincing wins on home ground the previous 2 matches. There is no previous record of encounters between Mavericks FC and Kamikaze FC, except that the organiser had warned that this team will pose a stronger challenge compared to Sunand F C.

Mavericks' unbeaten home record is somewhat impressive, however, their away record for the past 5 matches (W-L-D-L-D) is rather dismal. Despite the statistical fact, Mavericks is determined to brush away their horrible away record especially with most players regaining top form last week.

The D'Maverians should go all out for a win and clean sheet for this weekend fixture.

Mavericks' man-to-watch: Chuan Ji

  • The commanding centreback in the heart of the D'Maverian defence, who also missed getting his Man-of-Match award from previous match by 1 vote, should be expected to keep out opposing strikers with his timely tackles.

* Hey guys, remember to confirm your attendance under the comments section even if you are not playing. It takes only a few seconds of your time and saves us hours of inconvenience by asking every single player.

I'm updating the preview at 2am so as to bring the latest news to everyone. Everyone is busy with their school, work, army and personal commitments, including the organisers. I would appreciate if you could do your part to update us at the earliest possible notice also.

Fluke Of The Year?

?? (vs S-Team)
Adrian
Standing in for the absent custodian Alex, 2nd choice keeper and right back Adrian seemed a shadow of his past form, as the 1.78m tall player let not one but three delicate chips get over him into the goal. Team members didn't know to laugh or cry at his butter fingers' display.

?? (vs S-Team)
Chao Xing
The player who loves spectacular finishes. Chao Xing timed a perfect run into the area before executing a wonderful first time goal-bound volley. Unfortunately, quick reflexes from the agile keeper denied what would have been a great goal, or rather a great own-goal.

11 August 2007 (vs Antics)
Boon Kee
The winger-turned-striker seemed to have done well in clearing what would have been an inevitable goal over the bar with no one between him and the goal-line. The only problem, it was the opponent's goal-line.

1 September 2007 (vs Team Uncles)
Zhi Fei
The prolific striker showed his versatility as he easily switched to playing rugby from soccer within minutes. He repeated a Beckham-like penalty kick and scored a try from the spot.

22 September 2007 (vs Sunand F C)
Boon Kee
Again, Boon Kee demonstrated his entertaining trademark performance. After securing a goal for the match, he decided to tease the defence with his mazy dribbling. Wonderful control of the ball saw him round not just the defenders and the keeper but also the open goal.

22 September 2007 (vs Sunand F C)
Amir
A surprise nominee for this award. After Team Mavericks were awarded a controversial penalty, Amir showed sportsmanship by sending the ball straight towards the keeper who already dived to one side just as the winger stepped up to take the kick.

Have a nominee in mind? Feel free to send in your nominations under the comment's section. Voting is open to all players.

Mavericks FC Continue Fine Form at Home

Location: Sembawang Secondary School
Opponents: Sunand FC

Starting line up: Alex, Clement, Chuan Ji, Chao Xing, Chung Wei, Amir, Seng Yew, Jason, Boon Kee, Fuad, Zhi Fei

Subs: Mike, Weilong, Randy, Jiun Wei

FT Score: 5-2
HT Score: 2-1

Goals: Zhi Fei (12 mins, 78 mins), Boon Kee (23mins), Wei Long (54mins) Chao Xing (68 mins)
Assists: Fuad (2), Amir (2), Seng Yew
Man-of-the-match: Zhi Fei

Mavericks FC picked up where they left off from last week match against Las Hearutsusu FC, grabbing yet another win against Sunand FC, winning by a scoreline of 5-2. The match kicked off on a blistering hot afternoon at Mavericks' home ground, Sembawang Sec, with team players Mike, Weilong and Randy donning opposition colours for Sunand FC as temporary cover for the latecomers.

Mavericks FC started well in the match and took the lead during the 12th minute through their chief striker, Zhi Fei. A cross by fellow striker Fuad into the area was met with Zhi Fei's superb volley. Mavericks soon doubled their lead through a good set up by their very own "Nani" Amir, when he delicately chipped the ball over Sunand's biggest defender on the field to Boon Kee. Boon Kee wasted no time in bringing the ball down and used the outside of his right boot to send the ball into the net. 2-0 to the D'maverians. At the 25th minute, the D'maverians should have finished the game had Chao Xing's curling and dipping free kick from the edge of the penalty box not missed the top corner of the goal at the far post by inches. Mavericks FC then had another chance to seal the game again at the 31st minute, when striker Zhi Fei demonstrated how to earn a proper penalty: Throw yourself hard to the ground! Up step Amir with a weakly struck penalty kick that was duly saved by the keeper.

Sunand FC did not give up though and kept on with their attacking play. They were rewarded with a penalty, this time referee was being blamed for being a little harsh by the white-blues when he adjudged Mavericks midfielder Jason to have handled in the box. While Alex tried to put the opponent off, he could not prevent the ball from reaching the back of the net. The white-blues seemed to lose their nerves after the penalty during the last 5 minutes of the half, but they managed to preserve the 2-1 lead until the break.

The second half kicked off with Mavericks changing to an attacking 3-5-2 formation. With striker Fuad pulling back to be attacking midfield to cover up for the absence of playmaker Kee Siang, Mavericks looked to extend their lead as Fuad sent the hard-running winger Chung Wei down the line repeatedly to wear down Sunand FC's defenders. 9 minutes after the break, Fuad choked up yet another assist. This time his shot was deflected into the path of Wei Long, who drove home with a volley, once again proving his predatory and goal poaching instincts in the penalty area.

Sunand FC pulled one back through a well rehearsed free kick, their midfielder setting up their striker who twisted and turned when he received the pass and slotted the ball through the crowd into the bottom left corner. But after that, the match soon become one sided as Sunand FC's lack of subs took a toll on the first 11 players.

After almost 20 minutes into the 2nd half, Boon Kee missed a chance to double his goal tally for the match, when Amir sent a through ball to him. As he tried to round the keeper, the angle was duly covered by another defender. Some quick counterattack in the 68th minute saw winger Amir the provider yet again who was reintroduced back to the game at the 50th minute, he whipped a tricky cross into the box that caused confusion in the Sunand defence. Chao Xing showed once again how to be a wonder sub, coming on back to the game after a quick rest. Similar to a previous game against the Antics, he scored in less than 60 secs of playtime after coming in at the hour mark. A run-in into the penalty box from midfield saw Chao Xing outmuscle 2 stunned defenders, pick up the loose ball and power a shot past the helpless keeper. It was a goal at the right moment to put a dent into Sunand F C's morale after they threatened to come back from behind in the second half. Exciting Amir then produced some wonderful display of ball control resulting and beating the opposing defence several times but had every reason to curse his finishing for not being able to add to his goals tally.

The game is well and over when Zhi Fei sealed victory for Team Mavericks in the 78th minute. This time midfield maestro Seng Yew sent in a long through ball for Zhi Fei to run past the weary defender of Sunand's. Zhi Fei dribbled into the box and sent an unstoppable shot at the tightest angle into the roof of the net. Great classy finish. The rest of the game progressed without much highlights as both teams pressed on for more goals, with Mavericks being the more dangerous side on the counter.

VOTING RESULTS FOR MAN-OF-MATCH AWARD:

Back to action again this Saturday, Team Mavericks entertains Sunand FC at Sembawang Secondary, the home of the white-blues. Mavericks will be looking to kick-start a winning streak following last week's 2-0 success over Las Hearutsusu..

Being the first ever encounter between the 2, little is known about Sunand FC. However, an outbound scout was able to catch Sunand FC in action not too long ago. And he reported that SFC plays a typical 4-4-2 formation with a compact defense and they rely heavily on long balls to beat their opponents' offside traps.

Currently, as it's the fasting period for the Muslims, Team Mavericks may have to make do with a half fit Amir and Fuad. So it’s time for others to step up a gear. Once again, the objective is to keep a clean sheet and scoring a couple of goals. Can Wei Long be in the right position at the right time to 'finish superbly' again? Will impressive Zhifei score? Will Jiun Wei clock another 8 secs for a 100m dash?

Stay tuned for the answers and more.

A message from Chao Xing to all fellow D'maverians, please indicate your attendance from now on under the comments' section. Thanks!

Jersey Problem

Hey guys as you all know, we have confirmed a few latest additions to the squad.. I wish to take this chance to extend my warmest welcome and thanks to the services offered by our new players. However, we seem to have a little problem with jerseys. Line7, our supplier, has phased out our current design. This means we are now wearing limited edition tops! Haha.. but that's besides the main issue. The issue is how can we achieve visual uniformity among the new guys and us?

One way is to change the entire design completely. Which means we will get the jerseys together as a team again. But when will we get the jerseys? When we have 25 players? We have 20 at the moment. And currently, 15 of us are holding to the authentic Team Mavericks jersey, while the others have been wearing their own tops. And what if we have new players again and the problem simply repeats itself?

The second is to continue to outsource for new supplies, but so far, our attempts have been futile.

The third is to recall the jerseys from ex-players, however so far, Wilson seems to be reluctant to sell his number 24 jersey back to us. And the thing is his one jersey is not enough still.

A short term measure is to borrow from those who will be away for a period of time. Like in the case of Adrian. But then again, there are still other problems and concerns.

I need opinions.

Mavericks End Winless Streak

15th September 2007
Venue: Fernvale Pitch 1
Opponents: Las Hearutsusu F C

Starting line-up: Alex, Jiun Wei, Chao Xing, Clement, Mike, Chung Wei, Seng Yew, Wei Jie, Amir, Wei Long, Zhi Fei, Fuad, Chuan Ji, Kee Siang.

FT score: 2-0 (HT score 1-0)

Goals: Wei Long ('20), Wei Jie ('62)
Assists: Amir, Fuad
Clean Sheet: Alex
Assists: Chao
Xing, Clement, Jiun Wei, Mike
Man-Of-Match: Jiun Wei

After 3 winless matches, Team Mavericks regained their top form this Saturday afternoon. Even though the morning rain had forced a last-minute change in venue away from the comforts of homeground advantage, it did not damper the team's determination to break the winless curse. And indeed, the white-blues rounded up an entertaining performance with a clean sheet as well. Of course, the credit should be shared with two die-hard Maverick supporters, who came all the way from far to witness our beautiful victory.

With Mike's commanding presence in the defence in the first half, Mavericks started off with composure in the usual 4-4-2 formation. Despite having to cope with the Hearts' overloaded attacking options, the defence managed to hold and contain Las Hearutsusu's attack effectively throughout the whole match. Kudos to the defenders!

It was only 20 minutes into the game when the white-blues took the lead . A through ball from Amir saw the ball ricochet off Zhi Fei's feet, which bounced to the unmarked Wei Long just outside the penalty box. Without hesitation, he drove the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

Right after the first goal, Mavericks was back to business again. The ever-running Chung Wei sprinted down the right flank without much challenge, and sent in a cross that found Zhi Fei in the centre of the penalty box. However Zhi Fei should curse his luck as he saw his volley sail harmlessly over the crossbar.

Las Hearutsus continued their relentless attempts at penetrating Team Mavericks' defences through the middle. On several occasions, Mavericks' defence seemed to lose possession too readily and it seemed that a goal was inevitable. However lady luck seems to be shining on the white-blues, as the Hearts failed to convert their chances. The first half ended with both teams almost equal on possession and chances.

The second half saw many tactical chances to the team. With star player Kee Siang and new signing Fuad joining the attack, it seemed as though Mavericks would be controlling the midfield. However, due to the pitch condition, it made it difficult for the midfield to keep the possesion. Although Mavericks did not manage to attack through the centre, the damage was done through the two wings.

In the 62th minute, a long ball from defence managed to find Fuad deep down the right flank. Just like most war movies, the flanking tactics worked effectively. He was able to draw two defenders away and this created a open opportunity for Wei Jie in the penalty box. With an accurate pass to him, he made it seemed so easy by slotting the ball into the back of the net. What a counter attack well-executed by the Mavericks, leaving Las Hearutsusu's defence dumbfounded.

Mavericks' very own version of Nani, Amir, could have made the victory even more complete in the 80th minute. With a dazzling dribble down the left flank, he found himself with the opponent's goalkeeper. He chose to put the ball into the far right corner, which just shaved past the side post.

The final whistle came as the Mavericks savoured a sweet victory after a lacklustre month.

Feedback:

We have to give due credit to our solid defence which managed to put the attack of Las Hearutsusu at bay. With some insider info provided by Zhi Fei, Chao Xing decided to focus on attacking football for this match. A great improvement for many in challenging for high balls. But of course, I personally feel that we could have done better in the attack as well as the defence.

From my view in this match, I feel that we can deploy more tactical runs at the attack to draw away defenders if we want to attack through the centre. When attacking through the flanks, wingers could try to release balls early. By doing this, strikers can run into space for the ball and disrupt the defence, while the wingers or other attackers can fill up the centre to finish it off.

I don't know if switching will work. But it will definitely cause some panic in opponent's defence if we can switch from right to left or vice verse, because i think we can notice that the other side of the field is usually left open and unmarked.

Defence should spread the ball to the full backs, who will be usually unchallenged. From there, we can look for opportunities to play down the flanks or push through the centre. Of course, this tactic is only workable if we are facing a team like Las Hearutsusu who loaded most of their players in the centre.

Also, under dangerous circumstances, the defence should put the ball up or if safer, out asap. Central defenders should try to refrain from dribbling past opponent unless you are well covered or really confident.

Finally, I guess our positioning and distance between players are still not at optimal level. We still can't maintain the shape mentioned by Mike. Usually, everyone including opponents will "cluster-f***" near the ball. But once we win the ball, we don't have anyone to pass to. Basically I guess is to maintain triangles, so that you have at least two options to play to. We haven't been playing a real short passing game I guess?

Well, I guess it may sound too idealistic. But with good tactics and planning, we can make our game more beautiful.

Weilong~

Mavericks FC, whose current form is LDL, is still in search of a win after losing to Melwood FC last saturday. However, their attacks are often menacing but unable to find the net. The lack of goals costs Mavericks FC the past 3 matches.

For this week's match, Mavericks FC will be on home advantage and will be striving to maintain their unbeaten home record. Last week's encounter against Melwood FC really exposed our aerial weaknesses and hopefully we will learn from there. As Mike suggested, we should just go for the ball before it reaches the ground.

As for the opposition, I received news that their defense is rather weak, but they make up for that in their attack, which can be really threatening at times. Expect a high scoring match.

Jiun Wei suggested that everyone reach by 2pm so we can do some light training before kick-off and discuss on tactics as well. So let's try our best to reach by that time. See ya guys this sat.

Who's gonna topple Amir for the top scorer chart? Or is Amir gonna retain it by scoring against Las Hearutsusu FC?

Match Betting Odds

15 September 2007, 1500 hours
Team Mavericks VS Las Hearutsusu @ Sembawang Secondary

1x2
Home Win - 1.80
Draw - 3.2o
Away Win - 3.90

Team Mavericks take on Las Hearutsusu at "Fortress" Sembawang Secondary, in their first ever meeting. Home ground advantage should favour Mavericks, who have never lost on home soil.
Note: All mentioned odds are intended as betting possibilities for full-time results. "Full-time" means 90 minutes of football played (plus injury time), and as clocked by the match official since his first whistle to the last. Ultimately, 90 minutes on the official's watch will be the 90 minutes played, even though we admire some watches which are just naturally faster than many others.

1/2 Goal
Mavericks (-1 1/2) - 3.35
Hearutsusu (+1 1/2) - 1.25

The last time Mavericks played on home ground, they whitewashed their opponents Antics 4-0. Another inspired performance may just see the hosts overcome the handicap.
Note: "-1 1/2" denotes that the team in question, must beat the "-1.5" handicap, since in primary school Mathematics, "-1 1/2" equals to "-1.5". Bearing this in mind, a Mavericks win by 2-0, 3-0, 3-1, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 1-(negative 1),etc. will see the "-1 1/2" being satisfied.

Total Goals
0 - 20.00
1 - 8.00
2 - 5.00
3 - 4.00
4 - 3.50
5 - 4.50
6 - 5.80
7 - 12.20
8 - 25.00
9 and above - 30.00

Interestingly, 4 out of the last 6 Mavericks encounters ended with a total of 4 goals. Meanwhile, 4 out of the 6 matches saw the white-blues score 2 goals. Another high-scoring match looks to be on the cards, with both teams known to play entertaining attacking football.
Note: "Total Goals" equate to the total number of goals, scored by both teams, officially declared goals by the match official. It does not matter whether the goal in question is actually technically or morally incorrect, as long as the official awards it. Video replays on goals awarded, which points to a technically or morally incorrect decision by the match official, will not bear any influence on the final outcome, as long as the official has blown the final whistle.

First/Last Scorer
Zhi Fei (Mavericks) - 4.50
Amir (Mavericks) - 4.70
Kee Siang (Mavericks) - 4.90
Kenny (Hearutsusu) - 5.00
Samuel (Hearutsusu) - 5.20
Fuad (Mavericks) - 5.80
Chung Wei (Mavericks) - 7.50
Clement (Mavericks) - 10.00
No Goal - 20.00
Player Not Listed - 3.00

Who will be the first player to find the net? Who will be the last player to score? The red hot form of Zhi Fei makes him the marginal favourites over regular Mavericks goalscorers Amir and Kee Siang. Or will Clement score his first goal of the season with a long-range thunderbolt piledriver? Of course, it must not be forgotten that Hearutsusu also boast some fine individual attacking talent in the form of the predatory Kenny and team captain Samuel.
Note: "Player Not Listed" may consist of goals scored by any players not listed in the above 8 (obviously), own goals, match referee, linesmen, fourth official, spectators, bypassers, and other natural or supernatural forces.

Specials - Total Number of Red Cards
0 - 1.10
1 - 5.50
2 - 11.00
3 and above - 50.00

Both teams come into this match with superb disciplinary records. For the Mavericks, no player to date has been shown the red card. Therefore, the 0 number of red cards look like a sure-fire bet. However, if by any chance the match ends with 3 or more red cards, both teams can consider entering the English Premier League.
Note: The universal rule is that a player getting sent off, receives a straight red card or 2 yellow cards. However, if the match official decides that it takes 3 yellow cards to result in a sending-off (probably due to the ref not keeping a small booklet in his pocket), there will be no refund whatsoever, of any potential winning bets lost.

Disclaimer: All odds offered are purely fictional and for entertainment purposes. Do not bet illegally, it is a sin. If any serious punting is necessary, please proceed to any island-wide friendly Singapore Pools outlet. However, last I checked, no odds corresponding to the match fixture Team Mavericks VS Las Hearutsusu, has been offered to the generous football-mad public.

Some tactical pointers

I think the current problem now is not that we are not scoring. It's just that we are leaking too many goals. Especially through high balls and "unforced errors".

It's ok to make technical mistakes. Cos after all we don't train and everything. But tactically we should learn from every match.

I learnt most of my tactics from soccer manga and winning eleven. It's hilarious, but true. Some manga like 少年足球梦 are damn tactical. If you're soccer mad, you'll enjoy it.

Sometimes it helps to think of scenarios and decide how you're going to deal with it if it occurs in a match. I use this visualisation a lot. Although some people may call it STONING. Haha.

I just feel that formation wise we should be more compact lah. As in the distance between players should be too big. 2 reasons for this:
1) easier to pass
2) if someone loses the ball, can immediately cover the guy's ass cos you're nearby and the opponent hasn't had time to accelerate yet

'Keeping shape' also means that wherever the ball is, the formation should shift towards the ball. Or 'lean' towards the area of play.

For example, in the match against Melwood, their goal kicks were aimed to our right flank. They piled their players on that one flank. So we should respond by putting more people there also. That means our right mid, centre midfields would all be there to generally "pack" the area. At the same time our left mid must also come towards the play. Otherwise the left mid will be isolated.

Imagine there's a chain linking every player in our team. The chain has a fixed distance. So everywhere you go, you should try to maintain that distance with the other players. Otherwise, space and holes start popping up everywhere. That's the true meaning of 'keeping shape'.

About defending. We have this habit of backing off too much. They are getting the ball way too easily. We should aim to always get to the ball before they do, or at least make it hard for them to receive the ball. Make them work for it. By staying too far back, they are getting too much space to control and decide what to do with the ball. The best moment to tackle the ball is when he is still trying to bring it down under control.

High balls are our weakness. It is very obvious. We should aim to make contact with all high balls first time. It is a GOLDEN RULE to NEVER LET THE BALL BOUNCE. I don't know where I picked that from, but it has proven to be true.

Headers. They're simple. Just keep your eye on the ball and stiffen your neck muscles. MEET the ball firmly instead of letting it hit your head. It hurts a lot less that way.

Ok I suddenly had the urge to type this so I hope it makes at least a little bit of sense. See you guys at the next game!

Brave Mavericks Falter Again

8 September 2007

Venue: Tanglin Field Pitch No.1
Opponents: Melwood FC

Line-up: Alex, Jiunwei, Chao Xing, Wei Long, Chuan Ji, Mike, Kee Siang, Zhi Fei, Boon Kee, Chung Wei, Wei Jie, Fuad, Clement, Amir, Boon Leng, Seng Yew

FT score: 2-5 (HT score1-2)
Mavericks Scorers: Zhi Fei ('39), ('55)
Assists: Boon Leng
Man-of-Match: Zhi Fei

It was not to be Team Mavericks day again, as they fell 5-2 at the hands of Melwood FC, thanks to their efferverscent star player, Guy, who flew all the way back from his hometown in Bristol City in London to Tanglin Park to meet up with the rest of his teammates for this big clash. Despite taking an early morning flight in his private plane, Guy showed no ill-effects of jet-lag as he ran riot in the Team Mavericks penalty box as he got a hand in creating 2 goals for his team. He was a constant menace, with his towering physique and aerial threat, as well as his shiny head.

The Mavericks started the match on a positive note, piling on early pressure in the opposition box. Boosted by the return of inspirational midfield man, Kee Siang, who returned from therapy (girl therapy, that is), as well as the explosive form of midfield playmaker Boon Leng, the Mavericks were on top of their opponents, as they constantly threatened the Melwood defence. Melwood FC was on the backfoot for the majority of the first half, until a rare counter attack reaped a freak goal for the men in blue. Melwood winger Don, managed to cut in from the right and tap in, beating Mavericks custodian Alex at his near post. Soon enough, after a lung-bursting run from Melwood full-back Ming Zhai, his early cross was deflected by Mavericks centreback Mike that went out for a corner. The following inswinger was headed away towards the edge of the penalty box, before Guy beat Amir in a challenge of headers (duh..), and his sublime knock-back reached the feet of winger Don who put in a cross which was tucked into the net by Ming Zhai. Brilliant assist indeed, from Guy.

Despite the 2-0 scoreline, the Mavericks put on a brave fight back, with Fuad's influence in the match increasing with each coming minute. And the Mavericks got their just desserts, as after great interplay between Wei Jie and Boon Leng, Boon Leng managed to slot in an exquisite through-ball for Zhi Fei who ran past the static Melwood defence stalwart Cheng, and rounded the keeper, before finishing it with aplomb. Great play from the Mavericks, as they hussled for the elusive equalizer. Kee Siang, once again, with his dazzling footwork, got into the rhythm of the game, and made the Melwood midfield look like schoolboys ( school-"old hags" actually). By now, a determined Melwood side, led by their very own, "Beckham" (albeit, a bald one), Guy, were anxious to hold out their lead till half-time. Team Mavericks were clearly in control, coupled by a tough-tackling backline which consisted of veteran centre-back Chuan Ji, Jiun Wei, Mike and Clement. Jiun Wei, on a couple of occasions threw well-timed tackles on the Melwood forwards, and this was a sign that the Mavericks were not going to be easy opponents for the afternoon. Soon enough, the referee (who brought his two silly linesmen with him) blew the whistle for half-time.

The Mavericks started off brightly once again, maintaining their shape, for the second half. Several changes were made, notably, team captain Chao Xing and Chung Wei, who came on for Boon Leng and Amir. And the men in white got just what they wanted, as after a brilliant build-up play, Zhi Fei was put through one-on-one with the keeper again, and this time around, he expertly slots the ball in between the legs of the flailing keeper, stating his claim with his and the Mavericks second goal of the game. However, lady luck was not on their side, as a free-kick was conceded outside of their box, and it was brilliantly dispatched into the top corner of the match, although the on-form Alex got a hand to it. Things got worse for the Mavericks, as further defensive blunders resulted in Melwood FC scoring their 4th and 5th goals of the match. Clearly, the several changes made by Melwood FC, who brought in young faces to replace the old jabronis in the second half, were having a positive effect on the team. Despite putting on a brave fight, Team Mavericks couldn't find their rhthym and shape which they showed in the first-half again, and had to settle for second best as they lost possession time and time again. Furthermore, Amir became angry during stoppage time when Cheng slid in a late-high-leg tackle on him but the referee surprisingly called for offside. Definitely not Team Mavericks day, today was.

Nevertherless, Team Mavericks should take this as an experience and lesson. They faced well-organized opposition, who made better use with their passes, as well as a particularly exuberant versatile player, who was everywhere on the pitch organizing his defence and midfield at the same time and giving the Mavericks a hard time with his superbly-timed jumps in the box. He was utterly devastating as all the Mavericks saw were flashes of fluorescent light wherever he went on the pitch. This man was simply sublime. This man single-handedly ended all hopes of a Mavericks comeback.
This man was Guy.

Those who were involved in the match against Melwood FC ages ago should know that they are good. And I mean, really good. That's because they are from some amateur league, not sure if it's Prime League or what, but whatever it is, the odds of us winning or even getting a draw with them are very little. I'm not trying to be pessimistic but hopefully, we can reduce the scoreline (11-1) from last time.

Let's take this as a good opportunity to really review our weaknesses, which Melwood are sure to exploit, and if possible, to showcase our strengths too. Be sure to be tested to the extreme in every department.

After the full-time whistle in our previous encounter with Melwood. Their skipper tried to poach Alex, Mavericks' no.1 stopper, to their team. However, Alex showed his true loyalty and remained with us. If any of you gets poached, better be loyah ah!

Most likely the match will start right on time at 1500 as this week's referee is arranged by the amateur league side, so it's best that everyone reached early. Especially since the field is a little inaccessible, try to leave your homes earlier a little bit. So see you guys on sat, and a little reminder, those who haven't confirmed attendacne pls do so asap!

Player out for 2 months

Calvin Teng, Mavericks' no. 16, will take a study break for 2 months to prepare for his 'A' levels. The athletic right-sided player had previously played as a winger or full back for Team Mavericks.

We wish Calvin good luck for his 'A' levels.

Training Match Proposal

Hey guys, we have been thinking of organising some training matches instead of only playing friendlies and not improving much after a significant amount of time. Therefore, some of us will be meeting up online via MSN to discuss whether the plan would be feasible. Hopefully, a detailed proposal should come up by then also. It should take place tomorrow night, probably in the period between 8.30pm - 11pm, the period when most of us should be online.

Some areas that will be covered in the discussion:

  • Venue (eg. location, type of field, standard size or 7-a-side?)
  • Budget (eg. booking fees)
  • Equipment needed (eg. cones, soccer balls)
  • Training programme (eg. objectives, type of training, duration, small/big group trainings, etc)
  • Contingency Plans (eg. wet weather, low attendance rate)

Please do not hesitate to join in the discussion as it involves you too. In the event where you are unable to join us in the online discussion but have some burning suggestions to offer, please leave a comment under this entry.

For your information, in case some of the guys are still unaware, you can leave a comment under each blog entry, which works similarly like a thread in forums. Therefore, please do not write it on the tagboard cause its primary usage is for chit-chat.

Disappointing Draw for Mavericks

1 September 2007

Venue: Yio Chu Kang Sec
Opponents: Team Uncles

Line-up: Alex, Jiunwei, Chao Xing, Wei Long, Chuan Ji, Mike, Zhi Fei, Boon Kee, Chung Wei, Fuad, Clement, Amir, Boon Leng, Adrian, Seng Yew

FT score: 2-2 (HT score:0-0)
Mavericks Scorers: Fuad ('50), Wei Long ('75)
Assists: Zhi Fei (2)
Man-of-Match: Alex

The absence of Kee Siang once again proved costly for Mavericks FC as they had to settle for only a 2-2 draw at Yio Chu Kang Sec this afternoon. Early in the game, Mavericks FC was awarded a penalty at the 30th min when Wei Long was brought down by the keeper in the box. Striker Zhi Fei, after missing in action for weeks, stepped up to take the spot kick which went harmlessly over the crossbar. Moments later, when presented with a clear chance to shoot from 15 yards, Zhi Fei chose instead to make a through pass which was intercepted by the opposing defender. Evidently, the penalty miss shook the confidence of the usually calm striker.

Team Uncles pushed forward and penetrated the Maverick makeshift defence which started the first half without first choice centreback Chuan Ji. On several occasions, Mavericks had to rely on commanding goalkeeper Alex to save the blushes from some seemingly school boy defending. A confident display from Alex seemed to suggest that he had already shaken off the disappointments from the previous defeat.

Mavericks FC started the second half brightly with a 3-4-3 formation, giving more attack options upfront. Within 5mins after kickoff, Mavericks FC took the lead through substitute, Fuad. A shot from Zhi Fei was deflected by the keeper into an unmarked Fuad's path, who coyly tapped the ball into the open goal. Mavericks FC 1, Team Uncles 0. The morale of Mavericks was raised by the goal as they burst forward again and again in search of a second goal. Chao Xing's runs down the left flank and Fuad's wonder crosses threatened Team Uncles' goal repeatedly. It seemed that a second goal will arrive soon when Team Uncles suddenly scored with a long range drive. Alex got a touch of the ball but was unable to keep it out on this occasion. 1-1.

Substitute Wei Long came on for Boon Kee at the 73th minute and made an immediate impact to the game. Mavericks FC took the lead for the second time scoring a well-built up goal. If Amir's through pass to Zhi Fei was considered almost perfect; the latter's one touch pass which found Wei Long should be considered simply splendid. Trapping the ball, Wei Long wasted no time in punishing the Uncles' defence by driving the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. Mavericks were in joyous mood after taking the lead again and Zhi Fei was once again the architect. However, their happiness did not last long as moments later after the kick off, Team Uncles scored the equaliser again though there were very strong suspicions of offside. Some players protested but referee Devan maintained his stand.

The team came down this afternoon in search for a win but had to end the game with a draw. Alex's wonderful saves could not produce a clean sheet or even a win for a disappointing game.
