Rain: A Weekend Footballer's Nightmare
A beautiful and sunny morning descended into a weekend footballer's nightmare in the afternoon when dark clouds consuming the clear blue skies unleashed their fury upon Singapore.
Heavy showers poured down in most areas last Saturday causing a large number of league games and friendly matches to be called off due to poor pitch conditions.
The correspondence caught sight of a lonely figure sitting dejected outside one of the grounds where the game was called off. The self proclaimed weekend football warrior, his name not revealed by request, spoke freely about his frustrations of having his game cancelled.
"This is real crap. I wait one whole week for my game of football, now the wait continues," he spoke with angst.
"I look forward to the game so much every week. I'm sure many others are like me,devastated," he continued.
"There's no lightning today, why can't they let us carry on with the game? We've been playing in mud since young..."
An unnamed official said, "For fields under the Singapore Sports Council, it is up to the pitch warden to decide if the pitch is in playable conditions. All you need is to play one match on a field in waterlogged conditions and pitch is destroyed until it is returfed again. There is also increased chances for player injury due to the uneven pitch conditions.
4 years running, match cancellations has always been a frustrating experience for the weekend player. It seemed likely that this month will see more rainfall coming down, but it will not dampen the spirits of the Outsiders. It is this month also, that they celebrate their anniversary. That they have come together, bond and shared a common dream that they will achieve together. That this month promises abundance of players, morale, and of course league points.
