Kadaloor, Punggol - Mavericks FC were held to a highly entertaining score draw on Saturday against Punggol North CSC in a match which the Outsiders could have won, after they finished the stronger of the two sides.
A rain-soaked pitch proved a disservice for the team in black, as they had to adapt to the wayward conditions of the field, which the home-team were already vastly familiar with. Mavericks were missing their influential midfielder Chung Wei, star striker Randy and the on-form Weilong and Fuad, as they welcomed back the return of Seng Yew, who put in a man-of-match performance on Sunday.
Punggol FC drew first blood, as their striker pounced on a defensive error; the usually capable Mavericks backline undone by the irregularity and slipperiness of the pitch. However, flamboyant winger Amir made a priceless intervention, as he pegged one back, after a tentalising one-two with Jerome (who undid the defence with a cruyff-turn-reverse pass) at the edge of the box, before sidefooting it past the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. 1-1.
The Mavericks midfield were doing well to contain the slick passing game of their opponents, who were clad in red, a symbol of the Punggolian courage, which has a rich and diverse history. Punggol Point or Tanjong Punggol appears as Tanjong Rangon on an 1828 map of Singapore. Punggol, also spelt as Ponggol, means "hurling sticks at the branches of fruit trees to bring them down to the ground" in Malay. It could also refer to a place where fruits and forest produce are offered wholesale and carried away. These possible names indicate that Punggol was a fruit growing district. The place is said to take its name from the river Sungei Punggol. Yet another interpretation is that it is a rendezvous point for those who await the wholesale agent who buys and takes the produce to the market. (source: Wikiepedia)
The Punggolians did not rest on their laurels, as they restored their lead soon. The Outsiders needed to take back their stranglehold of the game, and thus, switched to a 4-5-1 formation, with almost immediate results. Mavericks introduced several new faces into the fray, including new striker signing Jun Wen who scored a great double in his debut last week as well as anchorman Chin Yuen and midfield general Barry .
Soon enough, they equalised again through a penalty. Amir, who was tackled late from behind for the 1,347th time in the game, was felled in the penalty box. Up stepped Jun Wen, who duly dispatched it with a superbly taken penalty to make things square again. 2-2. Mavericks were upping the ante, with Darran's penetrating runs, and Chris with his Ramos-like bursts down the right. Mavericks nearly scored again, after great interplay between Jun Wen and Amir as the latter did a "rabona" cross for the striker to shoot, only to see the keeper save it.
Second half was an impactful affair, with both sides battling for possession in the heart of midfield. Chin Yuen, Barry, loan signing Clarence and the particularly effectively hardworking Seng Yew played their hearts out, as the Punggolian defence was split time and time again. Darren had a shot saved, after yet another trademark run down the wing. Also, Chuan Ji nearly got his name on the scoresheet for the first time in Mavericks colours, only to see his drilled header smack against the post and go out.
Alex, at the other end, was brilliant as usual, with important one-on-one saves. "I would recommend Italian clubs to buy Alex Hong from Mavericks,” stated Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni before the match .“He resembles Gianluigi Buffon and I am not exaggerating when I say this. “He is a born goalkeeper and there is a vacancy for players like this in Serie A.” Many fans agree with this, and we're sure of it.
However, to no avail, another defensive slip-up, literally, due to the wet pitch, gave Punggol FC another chance to take the lead. 3-2. However, the Outsiders were not about to give up just yet, as once again, great link-up play ended with Jun Wen releasing the ball to Amir, who, was mauled and manhandled (in the jaws, legs), and hacked down, but, just before he managed to stick in a foot and slot it past the keeper to make it 3-3.
Right at the death, skipper Chao Xing lifted a great ball into the box for Jun Wen, who managed to nip it past the keeper, only to see the ball roll across the goal-line, with Barry arriving just a split-second too late to tuck in the rebound. Final Score 3-3.
In the post-match press conference, the new owner expressed her delight at seeing her side put in a brave, courageous display, and signals her intention to bolster the Mavericks squad with a new left winger, after seeing the Mavericks No.14 barely surviving such an onslaught from their tenacious opponents. "I think it's time we get a new left-winger. At this rate, i don't think he'll be able to last half the season! Anyway, it was a really good team effort, and umm....is Clement free tonite? I wanna see his chest muscles!" (puts two fingers at her cheeks and poses).
The post-match conference also included a simply sublime "taupok" on veteran defender Jiun Wei for his birthday! One which he enjoyed very much!
