Mavericks FC continue their dreadful start to the season, with a 2-4 defeat to a youthful Reds side, despite playing at home where they have previously made known as "Fortress Sembawang". This disappointing result followed the shock 0-1 defeat to Team Uncles, but at least there was a vastly improved attacking display put up by the Mavericks.
It was costly defensive errors that gave the Reds a flying 2-0 lead, on both occasions, their striker managing to sprint through a static defence, before applying neat finishes that regular custodian Alex could do nothing about.
Stunned by conceding two soft goals, midfield dynamo Chung Wei was introduced and he made an instant impact when he delivered a superb through ball to Jerome, who finished the move with a shot in off the keeper from close range.
However, another costly slip-up meant that the Reds take a 3-1 lead into half-time. This time, a Ricardo Carvalho-style back pass was intercepted by a lurking Red player, who ghosted past the defence and made no mistake with his finish.
The second half saw the hosts pressing hard to come back into the game, with midfield enforcer Wei Jie spraying a series of delightful passes for right winger Calvin to attack. The substitute ran the defence ragged with his sublime touches and penetrating runs. Chris also made an impact with his fantastic reading of the game from midfield, making several crucial interceptions and crunching tackles.
Against the run of play, Mavericks FC were further pegged back, when an unmarked Reds forward applied the finish from point-blank range, with the defence failing to clear their lines early.
Seemingly unaffected by conceding yet another goal, the home team continued to pile on the pressure. It finally paid off when right back Jiun Wei smashed a stunning free kick against the crossbar, with the ball falling kindly for Wei Jie to volley home.
The Mavericks continued to attack but there was to be no time for an amazing comeback, with the final score at 2-4.
