Mavericks FC face a determined Balooku Utd this Saturday away from home as they look to add to their recent 4-0 drubbing of Orangees FC. The Outsiders were supposed to play at home for the upcoming clash but a last minute change in venue was made due to delays in the planned relaying of the pitch at the Stade de Sembawang. Past meetings between the two ended in victories in favour of the Outsiders, the most recent one, a 3-0 win away from home. The Balookutians face a race against time in their search for a goalkeeper after their previous custodian, aptly named "Beckham" was released on a free transfer.
The Outsiders, on the other hand, has no injury issues to take note of but they will be missing the services of reliable full-back Randy as he will be involved in the upcoming European Championships in Austria/Switzerland. Tenacious defender Jiun Wei will have to sit out the match as he will have to attend a wedding (his own wedding, actually) this coming weekend. Captain Chao Xing will also miss the match due to personal commitments. However, they will be boosted by the return to fitness of influential forward Zhi Fei.
In the build-up to Saturday's match, speculation was rife that Mavericks flamboyant winger Amir was seen having a rendezvous with several Balooku Utd officials and players at Vivo City. This would not come down good for the Mavericks board as several reports suggests that the player could be involved in a possible match-fixing agenda. The FA and the Mavericks Board of Directors will look into this issue and a pre-match press conference has been scheduled before the clash this Saturday to put the matter to rest. The winger has been an intergral part of the Mavericks midfield and this news would do a disservice to his team's preparations for the upcoming clash. The Mavericks no.14 could not be reached to comment on his rumoured involvement with their illustrious opponents.
Player to Watch: Wei Jie
Mavericks midfield man Wei Jie has been putting in assuring displays in the middle of the park . His hardworking track-backs as well as his ability to retain possession for the team in the tightest spaces has given his teammates an edge over their opponents, especially during spells of sustained pressure in the team's own half. His partnership with Seng Yew in the recent match over Orangees FC was one of the main reasons for their whirlwind victory. Coupled that with his trademark late runs into the box, he has added an extra dimension to the team's attack. Expect the diminutive central midfielder to play a pivotal role and the Maverick's no. 20 will no doubt give the Stade de Sembawang faithful something to cheer about this Saturday.
