A surprisingly subdued atmosphere at the Estádio do Serángoonã welcomed the Outsiders as the team strode onto the pitch from the tunnel. Maybe the extremely arid weather conditions had taken a toll on the Serángoonã faithful as their cheers did little to drown the spirits of the men in black. The Outsiders were looking for their first win of the season after dismal results in the opening 2 games and it was high time they get it right on the third try.
Mavericks FC were missing strikers Zhi Fei, Jerome and Wei Long and the hot pre-match lunch-time topic was that many had predicted a toothless display in front of goal by the men in black in a match they had to win to get their season back on track. Orangees FC weren't push-overs, and they got the ball rolling as they forayed into the Mavericks half in the opening minutes. However, the tides changed once the Mavericks midfield found their rhythm.
Mavericks played with a make-shift attack comprising of Chao Xing, and midfield dynamo Chung Wei playing in the hole behind him and this proved a handful for the Orangees defence, when supplied with the tentalizing runs of the wingers Amir and Faizy. Furthermore, the overlapping runs from full-backs Chris and Jiun Wei provided an extra outlet for the Mavericks to inflict their damage, and it was not long till they finally broke the deadlock.
A long free-kick from Jiun Wei into the box from the left was brought down by Amir and the Mavericks no.14 turned past his marker brilliantly in a split-second before blasting it home into the top-right corner of the net. A goal the team clearly deserved after a period of sustained pressure in the opponents half.
Seng Yew and Wei Jie did well in midfield for another counter attack as Amir was released down the left again, but his squared-ball missed the feet of Chao Xing as the ball bobbed along the goal-line before being cleared. Chris got a shot which sailed over the bar, but his enterprise down the right made him a certainty for the man of the match award alongside the speed demon Faizy. Mavericks loan signing Midzi made his presence felt as the Orangees did just enough to limit the scoreline to 1-0 to the Outsiders at half-time.
Second-half started off slowly after an explosive first-half which saw the Mavericks raining 10 shots on goal. The Mavericks defence was clearly having a good day, as they were rarely troubled except for a rather entertaining headed shot on the Mavericks goal by world-class centre-back Chuan Ji, only to be thwarted once again by the supreme reflexes of custodian Alex.
The team got their groove back, and veteran forward Fuad made it 2-0 with a sweet right-footed shot which was deflected by the keeper, only to see it trickle into the bottom corner of the net. That was his third goal for the club, and clearly after this performance, his current 15million pounds value would double. This was a goal that settled all nerves, and the team started stroking the ball with confidence around the pitch. Substitutes Tommy and Kee Siang combined well and nearly made it 3-0 after Tommy's shot went just inches wide. However, the Outsiders didn't have to wait long to make it 3-0 as Midzi got on the scoresheet with a great finish from six yards after being put through from another one of Amir's mazy dribbles from the left.
On the other end, the Orangees attack did trouble the defence a couple of times from the right, but Clement's intervention proved just enough. However, things went from bad to worse for the men in orange as they went a man down due to injury, after all their subs have been used up.
The Mavericks made full use of their numerical advantage and after great interplay from the Mavericks midfield, Chung Wei threaded in a superb through-ball to Faizy on the left who cut past the right-back before coolly slotting it in past the keeper with his left foot into the net.
However, the speed demon chose to celebrate his first goal for the club in a morbid and subdued fashion, leaving many home fans confused (was Orangees FC his previous club?) and his teammates troubled. Haha.Final Score 4-0.
Credit to the Orangees for giving their all and not giving up even though they were trailing and went a man down in the final 15 minutes of play. This was a classic team performance from the Mavericks, and they got their long-awaited clean sheet, something they clearly deserve countless of times, especially with Alex's safe hands in goal. Once the team found their footing and rhythm, it was no looking back. An overdue victory clearly-deserved.
