Team Mavericks Seal Comeback Victory
14 July 2007
Farrer Park Field
Team Mavericks 2 Team Uncles 1 (Half-time: 0-1)
Starting line-up: Alex, Clement (captain), Chao Xing, Seng Yew, Adrian, Chung Wei, Boon Leng, Kee Siang, Calvin, Tommy, Boon Kee
Substitutes: Jiunwei, Wei Jie, Robin, Fuad, Hisham
Goals: Kee Siang (2)
Assists: Fuad, Chung Wei
Man-of-Match: Kee Siang
A second half brace from attacking midfielder Kee Siang sealed a hard-fought 2-1 victory for Team Mavericks, after having gone a goal down in the first half.
Despite missing key players such as commanding centre back Chuan Ji and wing wizard Amir, the Mavericks displayed tremendous fighting spirit and managed to come away victors, against the hard running and solid organisation of the uncles. Previous encounters have produced closely fought and tight affairs, and this match was no exception.
Playing away from home, at the unfamiliar rugged surface of the Farrer Park Field, Team Mavericks took some time to get into their stride. However, it was the uncles who drew first blood when a low shot was steered into the bottom corner, amidst some confusion at the back, leaving regular custodian Alex with no chance.
The rest of the first half was a drab affair, with chances few and far between the two sides, although the uncles were the more dominant side, only unable to create clear-cut chances. The half-time whistle could not arrive any sooner as Team Mavericks sought to re-organise their tactics and introduce some fresh legs onto the pitch. Guest players Robin, Fuad and Hisham were thrown into the fray.
Indeed the second half saw Team Mavericks gain the upper hand, against the uncles who looked increasingly tired. The opponents did send a few shots over the bar from long range, but it was the Mavericks who equalised with the ever impressive Kee Siang converting a low cross from Fuad, from the edge of the six-yard box.
By this time, Kee Siang has already stamped his authority on the middle of the pitch with his mazy runs, while guest players Robin and Fuad linked well with intelligent passes, which at times, had the uncles chasing shadows. Elsewhere, left midfielder Chung Wei continued to close down the opposition and break down play, with his high work rate and physical presence. Slotting into the centre back position, Hisham also helped to stabilise the defence and provided several good clearances.
Team Mavericks were on a roll and Kee Siang popped up with the eventual winner, connecting well with a low forward pass from Chung Wei inside the penalty area, which nutmegged his marker on its way through. While the pass was superb, the finishing was splendid, given Kee Siang had to stretch to send a low shot past the hapless keeper.
Buoyed by the goal, the Mavericks continued to pile on the pressure, with Tommy, Robin and Fuad, trying their luck from distance, albeit to no avail. Defensively, the team coped well and managed to hold out till the final whistle.
Well done Team Mavericks!
