Team Heritage Tour
One day, a group of youths from the Provost Unit, decided to bring their "hangar soccer" tradition to the open fields. As there wasn't enough to form 11, brothers and friends were called in to make up the numbers for the first arranged match. And thus a new team was born.
On a particular field along Yishun Ring road, the players would never forget how easily forgettable their first friendly match's scoreline can get, as their opponents plundered the goals as though there were no defense. Despite the lack of teamwork and communication on the pitch, some of the players soon found unity in pushing the blame on 1 chubby player.
There were discussions and the team decided that its current crop of players had to be replaced. Along the way, some players either left on their own accord or were not called up again, while other friends were introduced into the team. And soon enough, after settling into the team, friends of these friends were in turn, recruited along the way. And an extensive networking began, as the team used the same method to source for new opponents and players. Out of the original team that first gathered in Yishun, the fact was somewhat lamented upon as only 4 of the first generation players remain active in the current team. Yet, there was much promise in the newer generations.
With a team formed by players from diverse backgrounds and cliques, it soon became a norm to play with new faces for every match, as the team continues to recruit and replace players who have left the squad. Every match's almost like a blind date, where one makes new friends each weekend. Furthermore, the players came from various schools, CCAs and different parts of Singapore. With such a uniquely diversified culture, "Mavericks" seemed apt to label a group of individuals not belonging to any particular clique, brought together as a team by chance and determination.
Being a team that plays primarily on Saturday afternoons, the team was also considered as a "Saturday Only" team. The phrase "dies Saturni", which meant "Saturn's Day", and from which the modern English word "Saturday" evolved, then came into the picture. And the team label, was thus, decided.
"Mavericks dies Saturni", Team Mavericks kicks off on every "Saturn's Day".
Saturday is the day of the week between Friday and Sunday and can be considered as either the sixth or seventh day of the week. It was named no later than the second century for the planet (Saturn), which controlled the first hour of that day according to Vettius Valens. The planet was named for the Roman god of agriculture Saturn. This has been called dies Saturni ("Saturn's Day"), through which form it entered into Old English as Sæternesdæg and gradually evolved into the word "Saturday".
