Mavericks Ends Losing Streak

Date: 30th Aug 2008
Venue: Tampines Lousy Field
(actually all fields in Tampines are lousy and.. overpriced!)

Substitutes: Wei Jie, Clement, Seng Yew, Chris, Randy, Wei Long

FT Score: 2-1 (HT Score: 1-0)
Goals: Darran ('33), Amir ('80)

MOM: Perry

Mavericks FC were given a rather raucous welcome by the home support at the expensive Tamp-ford Bridge Stadium as the team made their way out of the tunnel. The rain-soaked pitch greeted the team as the Outsiders fielded several new faces in their first eleven, after a flurry of last minute signings as the Board of Directors look to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes at midnight tonight.

The new signings, all of whom passed their medicals merely hours before match kick-off could not have wished for a better debut as they ensured that the Outsiders' recent bad run of form ended with a battling 2-1 victory away from home against relatively tenacious opposition.

Chung Wei was his usual self as he brutalised the opposition with his Jedi-force powers upfront, with new centre-midfield combination of Barry and Perry making short work of the men in orange (and a multitude of other coloured jerseys) with their brilliant passes and hassling. A brilliant threaded ball over-the-top from Parry found Amir onside, but his shot was well blocked by the keeper.

However, the winger made amends as he got past the full-back midway through the first-half, before playing an overhead kick cross-shot, which fell nicely into the path of the onrushing Darran who places it past the keeper to make it 1-0.

The Mavericks defence held on well, with Faizy and Jiun Wei at the heart of defence, and Chao Xing and makeshift right-back Chin Yuen having relatively comfortable games down either flanks. Speedy Eric made a telling contribution as he sped past 2 players after an interchange of passes with Chung Wei, only to see his shot drift wide of the post.

By now the Mavericks midfield were in control of the match, with the Barry/Perry combination doing exceptionally well. The Outsiders held on to their lead as Charles II the referee blew for half-time.

The second half saw the introduction of Wei Jie, Clement, Seng Yew, Chris, Randy and Wei Long into the fray. This mass substitution brought higher hopes of maintaining a clean sheet which the first half players have kept as well as the new strike partnership of the returning Randy and Wei Long.

However to no avail, a through ball managed to elude the back four somehow and Team Clarence's forward made no mistake in slotting past Alex, for the equaliser.
1-1.

Mavericks were not about to give up and went in search of another goal when a cross was almost converted from an attack from the left wing. The header went wastefully inches wide.

Team Clarence's resistance was finally broken when a superb Scholes-like long ball from Perry to the left wing found Amir in space, who hesitates no further and let rip a snap-shot half-volley which put the Mavericks in the lead again. 2-1.

The opposition resumed in determined fashion to grab another equaliser, relying on antics to get free kicks near the box on many occasions. If Mediacorp scouts were watching, they would surely poach some of them to act in the upcoming new Season of Crimewatch.

Their cries for fouls paid off when a player bulldozed into Wei Jie, claiming a free kick, which the referee bought into, just outside on the left-side of the box. Good ah.

The free-kick was well-taken (let's give them credit for this) which flew past Alex. Some of their players were already half-celebrating. However, an on-the-line clearance by Eric saved Mavericks blushes. Luck was definitely on Mavericks' side as on normal days they would've conceded like they always had on set pieces. Oh, and veteran centre-back Chuan Ji made a cameo appearance at the full time whistle as he had earlier missed the team bus.

Mavericks will be hoping to maintain their performance in the upcoming match after the win, which ended a 4 match winless streak.

Corners cost us again!

Date: 16th Aug 2008
Venue: Bedok Green Secondary (Artificial Field)
Opponents: Melwood FC
Kick off: 3pm
Starting line-up: Alex, Chris, Seng Yew, Clement, Jerome, Faizy's friend, Calvin, Chung Wei, Clarence, Zhi Fei, Faizy
Substitutes: Jiun Wei, Wei Jie,Chin Yuen

FT Score: 2-1 (HT Score: 1-0)
Goals: Zhi Fei ('71)
Assists: Wei Jie
MOM: Zhi Fei

As most of the players were late for the match, Mavericks started with 9 men. Luckily, Melwood FC is kind enough to lend us 2 of their players. Mavericks piled on the early pressure by releasing Chung Wei (also known as the" bull") to terrorise the uncles' defence. Zhi Fei once again was the dangerman for us. On the 32nd min, he pulled off a thunderous shot which rocketed against the crossbar.

Mavericks who were missing defensive lynchpin Chuan Ji, were immediately tested by the long balls from the uncles. When the No 9 uncle was put through on the right side, his shot was well saved by the ever reliable Alex. However, on the 40th minute, Melwood was awarded a corner. 1-0! Mavericks defence was exposed again by poor defending in the box. Melwood took the lead with a well taken headed goal. On the 43th min, Zhi Fei went close to scoring with a free header but the effort went just wide.

Second half, the younger boys replace the uncles. One of the guy's gf is hot! Haha. Chin Yuen, Wei Jie and Jiun Wei came on for Mavericks after the interval. Mavericks seemed to stabilise with Jiun Wei and Chris playing in the centre of defence. In the 64th min, Mavericks equalise. 1-1 ! Zhi Fei played a sweet one two with Wei Jie, and Zhi Fei shot powerfully towards the top left hand corner, leaving the Melwood's keeper with absolutely no chance.

However, 5 mins after the equaliser, Melwood scored from the corner again! WTF! Out of nowhere, the Indian guy from Melwood popped up to score a header. Down but not out, Mavericks tried to find a second equaliser. On the 80th minute, Seng Yew missed an indirect free kick inside the penalty box by inches. And the final whistle blew, 2-1 was the final score.

Mavericks is clearly missing the pace of Amir who is been busy dating with Chinese gurls. Lets wish Zhi Fei all the best in Taiwan !!!

Mavericks Put up Good fight in 3-4 Loss

Date: 2 August 2008
Location: Stade de Sembawang
Kickoff: 3pm
Opponents: Premier FC

Starting line-up: Alex, Chris, Chuan Ji, Seng Yew, Clement, Jerome, Jiun Wei, Chao Xing, Amir, Zhi Fei, Chin Yuen
Substitutes: Calvin, Chung Wei, Barry

FT Score: 3-4 (HT Score: 2-1)
Goals: Amir ('25), ('41), o.g. ('76)
Assists: Jiun Wei, Chung Wei
MOM: Amir

Under the hot afternoon sun, the match kicked off late due to some latecomers from Mavericks FC. Mavericks FC piled on the pressure early in the game and tested the Premier FC goalkeeper quite a number of times. Shots came from Jerome, Amir and Zhi Fei. Zhi Fei had an opportunity where he took a potshot from outside the box but the keeper pushed it onto the crossbar. So Close! Against the run of play, Premier FC took an early lead when Mavericks FC defenders failed to clear the ball from a corner. Clement tried to block the shot from in front of the goal but it was to no avail.

Mavericks FC went in search for the equaliser and came close during the 23rd minute. Chung Wei was put through but he scuffed his shot and was saved by the goalkeeper. Later on, Mavericks FC managed to earn a corner. A short corner was played and Amir was found free on the right flank. He took a Ronaldinho-esque left-footed shot which flew high and over the goalkeeper. Scoreline reads 1-1.

The goal gave Mavericks FC motivation to push on to win. Close to the end of the first half, Mavericks fC took the lead through Amir. Jiun Wei took a 30metres free kick which the keeper failed to handle properly, and Amir was quick to pounce on the rebound to finish it.

In the 2nd half, (Gareth) Barry came on for Seng Yew and there was added tenacity in our midfield. Through the half, he made lots of challenges and tackles which showed his presence in the centre midfield. In the 58th min, Premier FC had a corner once again. The ball was half cleared and the Premier FC striker managed to head the ball back into the net despite Chuan Ji attempting to clear the ball on the line. The game was tied once again. Looks like Mavericks FC have problems dealing with dead-ball situations, especially corners.

There was many chances on both side of the pitch, and during the 65th min Amir had a good opportunity to take the lead when he won the ball in attack and ran into a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. However, the Premier FC goalie made his size a huge deciding factor in saving Amir's shot. The defenders of Premier FC was passing the ball among the defenders in a bid to keep possession and make Mavericks strikers run. However, a stray high pass back to the goalie actually ended in disaster for them. The keeper failed to control the ball and the ball went right into the net through their own player. 3-2 to Mavericks!

About 5 mins later, Premier FC equalised through their midfielder Jia Long, with a superb run and shot into the corner. Score tied at 3-3 with 15 mins more to go. The drama was not over yet. Amir once again had a clear chance when he was put through by a super long ball from Jiun Wei. However, his shot jus went agonizingly wide. In the 83rd minute, the game was settled when the Premier FC striker put a shot into the right hand side of the Mavericks FC goal. Mavericks FC put on a brave display but it was just not Mavericks FC day.
