Mavericks will be missing their tireless star midfielder Chung Wei through injury for at least 2 weeks as well as influential forward Zhi Fei this week. This comes as a huge blow to the team as Zhi Fei's goals and Chung's relentless running throughout the pitch has been instrumental in the Mavericks' fine form the past few games.

We wish Chung Wei a speedy recovery and hopefully, he can return next week to plough the grass of Sembawang Sec once again as well as have Zhi Fei back to continue plundering the goals for the men in black.

Scorchers has thumped the men in black in their previous encounter which is almost a year ago. This doesn't sound good man.

Guys, please don't be late or we'll have to kick-off with less than 11 again!

You know who you are ok! (ahem...Clement...ahem)

Mavericks man-to-watch: Chris

Having been hit with a left ankle injury, powerful right back Chris returns after several weeks of match conditioning. At the pre-match press conference, Chris assures Mavericks fans of his fitness while looking ahead of the impending clash with the Scorchers. " I feel good, my physical structure is nice. Coach Jeremiah is pleased with me, he says my body is great and hot since i started playin in Serangoon. It's true, i feel strong. JA!! Das ist gud, das ist fantasic. Colin KAZIM KAZIM, you're down, Fatty Terim, you're down! Viva Deutschland Fuballnational team!"
Wise words indeed.

On a side note, Mavericks FC wishes Jerome, no. 10, to faster grow back his lips so that he can start terrorising the right flank again. But anyway, you still look cool even though you have bigger lips now. Way to go, Jerome.

Zhi Fei double seals victory for Outsiders

Date: 28 June 2008

Location: Stade de Sembawang
Kickoff: 3pm
Opponents: (insert) FC

Starting line-up: Alex, Chris, Chuan Ji, Seng Yew, Clement, Jerome, Wei Jie, Faizal(guest player), Amir, Zhi Fei, Wei Long.

Substitutes: Calvin, Chung Wei, Jiun Wei

FT Score: 3-0 (HT Score: 0-0)
Goals: Zhi Fei ('54), ('68), Amir ('75)
Assists: Wei Jie (2), Calvin
MOM: Jerome
Injuries: Jerome

A sublime double from star striker Zhi Fei sealed a hard-fought contest at the Stade de Sembawang on Saturday in a 3-0 victory over (insert)FC. Only a serious injury to fellow top-scorer Jerome marred an otherwise cracking encounter which saw winger Amir adding a third goal for the Outsiders later on in the game.

As usual, the Outsiders started with less than 11 men and Ref Charles decided to not wait any longer as he had already finished listening to the whole "Songs of Freedom" album by Bob Marley on his iPod twice. The match kicked off half an hour late and this would not come down good for the club as the Mavericks Board now faces possible disciplinary action from the FA.

Mavericks were missing unsettled playmaker Kee Siang, and several others through injuries and suspensions and could have had veteran defender Jiun Wei missing as well, however, he managed to make it on the bench.

The first-half was a flurry of half-chances, with Zhi Fei, Wei Jie and Wei Long all testing the keeper from distance. Jerome, who was the Mavericks' most dangerous player, was involved in a clash of headers, in a seemingly "50-50" chance which ended with the player being stretchered off and eventually sent to the Changi Hospital A&E with a bloodied lip after being charged down by the IFC left-back.

Ref Charles booked the player and the resulting free-kick from Amir was deflected off for a corner. The
subsequent corner from Seng Yew was met with a great header from loan signing Faizal which went agonizingly inches wide. Faizal was in the thick of action alongside Wei Jie at centre midfield as the team battled for possession. IFC threatened the Mavericks goal with their set pieces, but the valiant defence led by Chris held on firmly.

The half-time team-talk worked wonders as the Outsiders got the stranglehold of the match as the game wore on. Midfield pitbull Chung Wei entered the fray as the Outsiders switched from their standard 4-5-1 into an attacking 4-3-3 (which meant that Amir didn't have to defend anymore..haha). Zhi Fei and Wei Long combined well, with Wei Jie running things from the middle of the park, and Chung Wei dominating in midfield.

In the 54th minute, Zhi Fei broke the deadlock from an intercepted pass from Wei Jie. In one single motion, the striker got hold of the loose ball, before swivelling past his marker, and letting rip a thunderbolt from outside the box and into the roof of the net. Surely, another contender for goal of the season. 1-0.

The men in black grew in confidence with every flowing wave of attack, and rightly so, they doubled their lead, after another masterclass finishing from Zhi Fei.The no.12 got on the end of a brilliant ball over the top from Calvin from the right, brushed past his marker, and finished it superbly past the keeper into the bottom corner of the net.
Maybe he should start writing "An Idiots Guide to Finishing" for people like Newcastle's Alan Smith. 2-0.

It was not one-sided all the way though, as IFC again threatened with their corners, which curled in dangerously into the box each time, but the Mavericks backline dealt with them well.
The men in red nearly scored on two occasions during a brief period of pressure, however, keeper Alex's heroics ensured the scoreline remained that way.

Amir had a glorious chance to seal the victory after a mesmerizing run in the middle that left 4 players in his wake before seeing his left-footed drive palmed away by the keeper. However, he didn't have to wait long, as a perfectly-lofted pass from Wei Jie which beat the offside trap, was brought down well, before he raced past the defender and placed it beyond the keeper and into the net to make it 3-0.

The Mavericks defence with commanding centre-back Chuan Ji in fine form, coupled by great defensive displays from Chris, Seng Yew and Clement ensured that the Mavericks held on for a second clean sheet of the season.

Man-of-Match awarded as a tribute to Jerome, the fleet-footed Mavericks no.10, who gave his all in this match, and got seriously injured for his bravery and hard work down the right flank. Remember to drink all those VitagenCollagen because Felicia Chin says its good and it helps wounds to recover quickly.

Morale is high in the Mavericks camp after the team notched their first ever victory over traditional rivals S-Team last week. The Outsiders will face (insert) FC this Saturday at the Stade de Sembawang in a first meeting between the two sides. Little is known about their opponents this weekend, but media sources have labelled the team as a 'young, enterprising' side, and the fans can expect an energetic performance from them as the Outsiders look to extend their recent unbeaten run to 5 games in what could be another high octane encounter for the men in black.

Mavericks FC would be missing world-class centre-back Faizy as he is involved in the 2008 European Championships (as a ball-boy...haha) while captain Chao Xing will continue serving his ban after reaching the yellow cards limit. Other than that, the team will be relieved to have their first-choice defenders back in action after missing out last week through injuries and suspensions. The match looks to be another platform to shine for new signing Hakim if his contractual issues with the FA can be resolved before matchday after an explosive debut against the S-Team last week.

Player to Watch: Seng Yew
The classy midfielder has been giving classy performances for the Mavericks in recent matches and has shown his versatility which has been an asset to the team. In the past few matches, he has played classily at centre-back like Russia's Denis Kolodin, classily at the holding midfielder's role like Sergei Semak, and classily at left-back like Yuriy Zhirkov. Now the question is, can he classily play like the man-of-the-moment Andrei Arshavin? Fans will be eagerly anticipating the long-serving Mavericks man to shine at the Stade de Sembawang
this coming Saturday.

Outsiders Secure First Victory over S-Team

Date: 21 June 2008

Location: Pig's Heaven Arena
Singapore Chinese Recreation Club

Kickoff: 3pm
Opponents: S-Team

Starting line-up: Alex, Roy (guest player), Chris, Seng Yew, Raymond (guest player), Hakim (guest player), Wei Jie, Chung Wei, Amir, Zhi Fei, Faizal (guest player).

Substitutes: Clement, Jerome

FT Score: 5-3 (HT Score: 5-1)
Goals: Zhi Fei ('7), ('16), Amir ('24), Wei Jie ('34), Jerome ('44)
Assists: Amir, Hakim, Zhi Fei, Chung Wei, Wei Jie
MOM: Chung Wei

Mavericks FC notched a relatively comfortable 5-3 win today against S-Team to record their first victory over their traditional rivals. Despite the raucious home support, the home team were left stunned by the end of the first half which saw them trailing 5-1 down.

Most of the home fans at the Pig's Heaven Arena had already left the stadium by then to have an early dinner at a nearby prata shop in Farrer Park while the rest chose to go and enjoy the cricket game which was going on beside the stadium instead. Nevertheless, it was a different S-Team side in the second half as they pulled 2 goals back, although it was a case of too little, too late as the Outsiders held on to a well-deserved victory.

The Mavericks were severely depleted in defence, and a makeshift centre-back pairing of Chris and Seng Yew was deployed with loan signings Roy and Raymond as full-backs. Chung Wei and Wei Jie continued at centre-mid after their great games last week against X-S FC, with winger Amir on the left and highly-rated new signing Hakim starting on the right. Zhi Fei played behind target man Faizal, another last-minute loan signing, upfront.

Despite a man-of-the-match performance last week, Jerome was benched alongside Clement as the Mavericks Board looks to take disciplinary action against the two players for arriving late on match day after a heavy night of partying. Defence stalwart Chris parties all nite every nite, yet he makes it on time on matchdays. Definitely, a good role-model for the two players to follow.

Zhi Fei broke the deadlock in the 7th minute with a fine right-footed finish after a trademark flamboyant run from the left from winger Amir, which brought about a brief silence to the home crowd. However, S-Team equalised almost immediately, after a misunderstanding from the Mavericks defence. This did not dampen spirits as the impressive Hakim shone on his debut, showing great footwork on the right, before releasing Zhi Fei who finished it with aplomb to restore the lead.

From here on, the Outsiders embarked on a 20 minute goal rush, with the midfielders dominating in midfield. After great build-up play, Amir ran onto a lay off from Zhi Fei and beat the defender for pace before placing it into the bottom corner of the net. 3-1. Chung Wei was instrumental in creating the fourth goal as he released Wei Jie onside, with Zhi Fei and Amir clearly not obstructing play despite them being in an offside position which television replays confirmed. Wei Jie was left with a simple task of placing it past the keeper into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 4-1.

Jerome was brought off the bench to kill the game off and he rightly did so just seconds after coming on as he ran onto a great pass from Wei Jie before slotting it into the net. Then, striker Faizal could have been put on through on goal if not for a blatant foul from behind on him in stoppage time. Alex made an amazing save as well, diving full stretch from a rasping shot from outside the box from the S-Team winger. Half-time score 5-1.

An expletive-laden, hard-core, boot-kicking, hair-drying half-time team-talk from the S-Team's manager Mang Ki Bu-Sok (which needed 6 different translators due to the players being of different nationalities) ended with him being sent to watch the game from the stands after match officials pulled him apart from a tunnel bust-up with man-of-match Chung Wei. A pity though, for the much celebrated ex-footballer, who was named in
the "FIFA 100", Pele's selection of the 125 greatest living footballers in the world.

S-Team, however, got their groove back for the second half.
And dominated for brief periods, as they pulled a goal back after another misunderstanding in the Maverick's makeshift defence. Another soft-goal was conceded half-way through the second-half, which ended up with Roy, who otherwise had a great game, putting the ball into his own net, giving S-Team a lifeline.

However, the Outsiders held on, and could even have furthered their lead, after the scintilating runs of Jerome as well as shots from Faizal, Zhi Fei and Hakim. By now, the fans from the home side who went off to watch the cricket game earlier on had returned to the stadium, in the hope of a comeback (as well as they had nothing to do since the cricket game had ended). However, it was not meant to be as Ref Charles blew for the final whistle. Final Score: 5-3.

The Outsiders are boosted by a recent 3 match unbeaten streak, after the high-octane draw against X-S FC at home last week. This coming weekend promises action as the Outsiders faces S-Team away as they look to continue this run against their traditional rivals, which till date, has been the team they haven't beaten in all of their previous encounters.

Statistics show that the Outsiders have yet to win against S-Team, and although this Saturday's clash is at the S-Team's home soil, the Mavericks are not about to sit on their laurels and soak in the pressure. The match won't be an easy one, but expect an explosive attacking performance from the men in black. Bring on the crowds at the dreaded "Pig's Heaven Arena."

Player to Watch: Jerome (no. 10)
The fleet-footed forward has been a revelation this season, after notching 4 goals in 4 games which see him topping the scorer's charts for the Mavericks. After almost single-handedly winning it for his team last week with 2 goals; one of which was a spectacular strike from outside the box, the Mavericks no. 10 will be all fired up and will continue his rich vein of form. Pundits are betting on the orthodox winger to score the first goal in this Saturday's clash, and the travelling Mavericks fans will surely not be disappointed.

Classy Jerome brace nearly wins it for Mavericks

Date: 14 June 2008

Location: Stade de Sembawang
Kickoff: 3pm
Opponents: X-S FC

Starting line-up: Mike, Clement, Chuan Ji, Seng Yew, Jiun Wei, Amir, Wei Jie, Chung Wei, Fuad, Terence (guest player), David (guest player)
Substitutes: Faizy, Calvin, Wei long, Jerome
Manager of the day: Chris (injured, sort of...)

FT Score: 2-2 (HT Score: 0-0)
Goals: Jerome ('60), ('78)
Assists: Terence (2)
MOM: Jerome

A classy brace from pacy forward Jerome nearly won it for the Outsiders in an exhilarating clash against X-S FC on Saturday. X-S FC could have nipped it in right at the death if not for lady luck as they spurned a golden chance in the final few minutes. However, it was a good performance from the team as they held on to a well-deserved draw.

The Outsiders started with 9 men, as Clement's Mitsubishi carrying Chung Wei, Jerome and Calvin were still on the SLE when Ref Charles blew for the start of the match. A pre-match presentation was supposedly to be held for vice-captain Clement to commemorate a record 759th appearance for the club as well as a food-tasting contest (mainly Nigerian dishes of Jollof Rice and Chinchin) which Charles was kind enough to delay (while listening to Bob Marley on his iPod) in order to let Faizy park his new Mazda 3 at a proper carpark amidst reports of the dreaded Auntie Fatimah on the loose in the area surrounding Stade de Sembawang.

The match kicked off in a flurry of half-chances as both sides tried to gain possession early in the game. Eventually parity was restored as Chung Wei and Clement entered the pitch to make things even. Amir wore the armband as stand-in captain for Chao Xing who was suspended for reaching the Yellow Cards limit after his aggressive display last season. The Mavericks board however, are happy that they do not have to waste transfer funds on another keeper, as Mike was awesome! in goal as a replacement for keeper Alex who was on international duty in the European Championships. This was a relieve for the Outsiders amidst last-minute breaking news that the goalkeeper they signed from wholivesnearyou.com could not make it for the match.

Mavericks FC had the better control of the match in the first half, as they had several chances which went begging. The impressive Fuad put Amir through on goal with a left-footed threaded pass, but the winger spurned the chance by shooting straight at the keeper. Loan signings Terence and David were effective in attack, as they linked well with the Mavericks centre-midfield pairing of Chung Wei and Wei Jie, who both had strong games as well. Seng Yew was sensational at centre-back as he answered critics who said he couldn't head the ball. Definitely a classy performance from the classy midfielder-turned-defender when we all thought he was a classy left-back. The men in black had several corners from the man himself, and each time a corner was taken, fans saw veteran defender Chuan Ji reminding the Mavericks attackers in the box that they have to watch out because Seng Yew might shoot from the corner flag.

First half ended 0-0 with keeper Mike making countless saves with his legs. The Stade de Sembawang faithful were in for a treat in the second-half which saw 4 goals. Jerome Boon Kee entered the fray and he made his presence felt with two classy finishes, even classier than
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, David Villa and Boon Leng combined and put together. The ORD personnel fired his first goal and broke the deadlock in the 60 minute after the hardworking hassling from Terence which put him through on goal and Jerome made no mistake with a fine finish. That brought about wild celebrations, led by manager for the day, Chris, who was injured but was not injured to play street soccer in the morning.

X-S FC equalised 8 minutes later, when a cross from the full-back which some nay-sayers say had already gone out of play, curled in and hit the bar and fell nicely for Yong Tevez to slot it home. However, 10 minutes later, the Stade de Sembawang faithful were treated to what could be another contender for goal of the season and surely, goal of the month as Jerome cut in from the right and produced a fabulous lob over the keeper's flailing arms and into the net. Chung Wei must be livid that his contender for the goal-of-the-season strike against Balooku Utd has once again found another competitor. A tunnel bust-up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic over his goal against Greece last week was enough.

X-S FC got a stranglehold over the match as the game wore on, and they got the equaliser after a goal-mouth scramble, which almost involved the whole Mavericks line-up. The Outsiders utilised a counter-attacking game, as Wei Long and Terence saw hopeful chances which went begging. However, an incredible strike from the X-S FC captain Yasin hit the bar, and the Mavericks defence, led by the commanding displays of Faizy, Chuan Ji and Jiun Wei held on for the remainder of the match as the match ended 2-2.

The first ever encounter between these two sides will be held in State de Sembawang this Saturday in an exciting clash where hopefully the rain will piss off and not make another match postponed.

Midfield creativo Boon Leng will be up against his former club, having joined X-S FC on loan during the transfer window, with a permanent deal imminent. Affectionately known as Booney* by his X-S teammates, & being the top scorer for them as well, he'll definitely be the man to watch out for as Mavericks prepare tireless midfield workhorse, Chung, to man-mark him.

*source from X-S official site

Mavericks FC will have to come up tops in this match, if they were to ever want to prevent Booney from permanently transferring to X-S FC, and to match the player's ambitions on the pitch.

Sources from the tabloids also state that X-S FC have been trying to poach Amir into their squad and Mavericks will definitely better get a good result if they want to keep their flamboyant forward. (but we all know Amir is loyal to Mavericks FC.... right Amir?)

A disappointing no-show last week due to torrential rains in the weekend left many of the Outsiders restless and eager to return to action. However, this coming weekend promises action as the Outsiders meet their traditional rivals S-team, which till date, has been the team they haven't beaten in all of their previous encounters. The Outsiders, however, will be shorthanded in defence, with them missing almost all of their first choice backline, with Clement, Chris, Faizy and Jiun Wei all unavailable for this Saturday's match.

Statistics show that the Outsiders have yet to win against S-Team, and although this Saturday's clash is at the S-Team's home soil, the Mavericks are not about to sit on their laurels and soak in the pressure. A Roma-inspired formation of 4-6-0 with midfield maestro Kee Siang playing in the
Trequartista role will be employed in a bid for a first victory at the dreaded SCRC field which the media have labelled as a Pig's Heaven due to the poor pitch conditions.

A 3-pronged attacking third consisting of wingers Amir and Jerome, with Zhi Fei in the middle, will be supported by the holding midfielders Chung Wei and loan-signing Michael. A relatively makeshift backline will consist of veteran Chuan Ji and the returning Mike at centre-back while Chao Xing will play at right-back. Seng Yew will get the nod at left-back and it will be a great opportunity for him to show everyone how classy a left-back he can be. The match won't be an easy one, but expect an explosive attacking performance from the men in black.

Player to Watch: Zhi Fei (no 12)
Zhi Fei's return to action should boost the chances to secure the Outsiders' first win against S-team. Makeshift strikers like Chao Xing have been struggling to fill the gap left behind by the no-show from several key attackers from the side that remained unbeaten for 9 consecutive games till the closing of last season. Fans of the Outsiders would be praying that the starting line-up this Saturday will include the star striker.

Follow-up to S-team Encounter

I appreciate the comments and feedback contributed by our members. It tells me of your enthusiasm about weekend soccer. I thank everyone for saying their piece.

First of all, Clement had already arranged with S-team for the match before he left the country and so we will honour the prior arrangement. When Johnny from S-team called me, the pitch was already booked. So the only alternative was to reject the arrangement and not to change the venue, which would not be the wisest choice as we seek to maintain our team's reputation. But I assure everyone that our next meeting against S-team will be at homeground, which I would bring it up to their captain this coming Saturday.

I understand everyone's concerns and I believe I have the same number of issues as those who live in the west. I guess we should take it positively and make an away win the main focus instead of our own grumbles. Let's be better prepared for the "unfavourable" conditions this time round. I suggest we get a few pet bottles mineral water (1.5l) for drinking and washing up and extra dry clothes plus towel to the match this week.

Please note that the team ball carriers, Jiun Wei and Clement are on holiday. We will need someone else to bring his own ball for the next 2 weeks. I hope anyone who lives near Farrer Park will volunteer, otherwise the alternative would be assign someone to buy a third team ball, which I would have to consult Alex for permission to use the funds and to set a budget.
